Palmdale Urges Safe Driving After Tragic Spike in Fatal Collisions
PALMDALE, CA – The Palmdale City Council is urging all residents to exercise extra caution and practice safe driving habits following a tragic series of fatal traffic collisions in May. More than 10 lives have been lost on Antelope Valley roads in recent weeks.

“It’s devastating to see so many fatalities in such a short period of time,” said Mayor Austin Bishop. “We’re calling on every driver in Palmdale to stay focused, slow down and make safety the top priority when you’re behind the wheel.”

The spate of the recent crashes highlights the importance of driving defensively and avoiding risky actions like texting, using phone apps, eating or grooming, excessive speed, aggressive maneuvers and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Pedestrians are also reminded to stay aware of their surroundings, make eye contact with drivers and only cross at designated crosswalks and intersections when safe to do so.

With school out for summer, the City especially encourages parents and guardians to have open conversations with their teen drivers about remaining attentive behind the wheel. As summer travel increases, all drivers should be extra vigilant on the roads.

City of Palmdale Calls Upon Artists for Roundabout Sculpture Project
PALMDALE, CA – The City of Palmdale is excited to announce a call for artists to design and install a public art sculpture in a new roundabout under construction at Avenue S-8 and 40th Street East. This project is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to enhance our shared areas and support non-motorist safety, mobility and comfort. The sculpture will serve as a significant visual enhancement, reflecting the diverse landscape and spirit of Palmdale.

“Roundabout art helps transform our urban infrastructure into dynamic public spaces. It not only enhances traffic flow and safety but also brings cultural expression to our streets,” said Mayor Austin Bishop. “We are looking for artwork that captures the unique character of Palmdale and serves as a landmark that will be enjoyed by our community.”

The project budget is $40,000, which covers the artist fee, proposal design stipend, fabrication, welding, engineering, equipment rentals, transportation, installation and other associated expenses. The call for entries is open to artists residing in California. Applications are due by June 14, and submissions will be reviewed from June 15 to June 21, with notification of a decision by June 25.

Palmdale’s Expanded Sam Yellen Park Offers New Public Art Opportunities
PALMDALE, CA – The City of Palmdale invites California artists to apply for two public art projects at the newly expanded Sam Yellen Park (5100 E Avenue S). The Phase II development adds futsal courts, a dog park, sports areas, playgrounds and an event plaza. This expansion offers artists a chance to showcase their talents through installations, enhancing the newly created community space.

The first opportunity is for a permanent outdoor sculpture with a budget of $53,000. The Public Art Commission recommends the sculpture reflect themes of dogs, sports and the local desert landscape including Joshua trees, yucca plants and poppies.

“Public art plays an important role in creating vibrant spaces that resonate with the community,” said Mayor Austin Bishop. “We’re looking for an iconic sculpture that captures the spirit of Palmdale.”

The second project is a $31,500 commission for two ceramic tile artworks created in collaboration with students from Yellen School and Buena Vista Elementary. The selected artist must have experience working with children. The ceramic tiles should also incorporate the approved themes celebrating Palmdale’s natural scenery and identity.

Energy for Palmdale’s Independent Choice Launches EV Incentive Program: Your Ride is EPIC
In a move to accelerate the adoption of green transportation, the City of Palmdale is pleased to announce the launch of the Your Ride is EPIC program, initiated by Energy for Palmdale’s Independent Choice (EPIC), the City’s locally managed, non-profit energy provider, which offers renewable energy to residents and local businesses at competitive rates.

Your Ride is EPIC offers eligible customers the opportunity to receive a free (or significantly discounted) plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or electric vehicle (EV) charger.

“Palmdale is at the forefront of innovation and this project is designed to reduce barriers to entry and associated costs for converting to low-emission transportation,” said Mayor Austin Bishop. “The initiative marks a pivotal step toward achieving the City’s renewable energy, air quality and climate action goals.”

To qualify, EPIC customers must provide proof of ownership of a PHEV or EV. Once enrolled, each household may purchase a new plug-in EV charger of their choice and receive a reimbursement of up to $250. This offer is available at www.PalmdaleEpicEnergy.com until funds are depleted.

The festivities, including a Juneteenth-themed paint and sip experience, are free and will take place on Wednesday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Poncitlán Square (38315 9th St. East).

“Thank you to the AV Black Chamber of Commerce and Future Leaders of California for partnering with us on this historically significant celebration,” said Mayor Austin Bishop. “This commemoration offers a wonderful opportunity for neighbors and friends to come together to observe the profound legacy of Juneteenth.”

Juneteenth, established as a US federal holiday in 2021, commemorates June 19, 1865, when President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation reached the last Confederate state with the order that all enslaved people were free. The arrival of Union troops with the news at Galveston Bay, Texas, along with the ratification of the 13th Amendment, marked the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas in 1866 and today is marked by annual observances across the country recognizing the end of slavery and celebrating Black culture and achievements.
