Protecting Our Children Must Be a Priority
I want to bring your attention to a deeply troubling development at the State Capitol.

Assemblywoman Maggie Krell, a former prosecutor and a Democrat, introduced a commonsense bill that would have made it a felony to purchase sex from 16- and 17-year-olds. This legislation aimed to protect vulnerable minors and hold predators accountable. I strongly supported this bill, and I know many of you would too.

But yesterday, the Democratic Super Majority amended the bill—gutting it of its core purpose. They not only removed the felony provisions, they also removed Assemblywoman Krell herself as the bill’s author.

Let me be clear: soliciting sex from a minor should never be treated as a slap-on-the-wrist offense. Reducing the penalty for purchasing sex from a 16- or 17-year-old sends the wrong message and protects the wrong people. I’m outraged that this bill was sabotaged for political convenience instead of being championed for what it is—a measure to defend children from exploitation.
It's my honor to represent you in the State Senate, and I will continue to stand up for victims and for policies that protect our most vulnerable, even when it's not politically easy. Our kids deserve nothing less.

If you have any questions about this bill, or need assistance with any state agency, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Suzette Martinez Valladares
Senator, 23rd District
