The exhibition will be on view from Saturday, January 31, through Sunday, March 15, 2026, at MOAH:CEDAR. An opening celebration will be held at MOAH:CEDAR on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., in conjunction with the opening for MOAH’s Winter/Spring 2026 exhibition season. This free opening event will include live music by the Sunday Night Singers and the Antelope Valley Guitar Society, art activities, face painting, games, and a free hot chocolate bar provided by RefiSnacks, in addition to a first look at the new exhibitions. Food will also be available for purchase from on-site food trucks. MOAH:CEDAR invites you to join us for an afternoon of creativity, celebration, and community!

An Impossibly Normal Life imagines an alternative history in which queer identity and relationships were not suppressed but openly celebrated. Inspired by Finley’s discovery of a late uncle who may have been gay, the exhibition offers a fictionalized re-telling of his life. Finley uses found archival photographs from around the world to re-imagine his uncle’s story through snapshots of everyday moments such as college graduation, marriage, and the raising of a child. These ordinary images become radical acts of reclamation, portraying a life that generally wasn't afforded to queer people in pre-1970's America. The vintage photographs are embellished with glitter, rhinestones, and sequins, radiating with playfulness and queer joy. An Impossibly Normal Life is a celebration of queer love, not only re-writing the past but providing a vision of a more inclusive future.
Based in Los Angeles, Matthew Finley has exhibited in solo and group shows at galleries across the United States. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago, the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH), and the Center for Fine Art Photography. In 2024, Finley received CENTER Santa Fe’s Personal Award as well as the Center for Photographic Art’s LGBTQ+ Artist Grant for his project An Impossibly Normal Life.
