Information on my fire safety legislation |
I am reaching out to share some important legislation I introduced this week to help safeguard our communities from the devastating wildfires and protect victims from opportunistic criminals during these emergencies.
Make Impersonating Emergency Responders a Felony
This bill will allow prosecutors to bring felony charges against those who impersonate police officers or firefighters during a state of emergency. This legislation will help protect both our communities and first responders from criminals who take advantage of chaotic situations to exploit residents.

Updated Road Closure Dates for Avenue J Interchange Improvements Project |
Lancaster, CA - The City of Lancaster, in coordination with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is sharing an extension of select ramp closures as part of the ongoing Avenue J Interchange Improvements project. Due to delays in material delivery and the impact of cold weather and rain events, Caltrans has approved extended closure dates for the following ramps:
Southbound Avenue J Off-Ramp Closure: Extended from January 31 to February 21, 2025 Northbound 20th Street West Off-Ramp Closure: Extended from January 24 to February 11, 2025
The Avenue J Interchange Improvements project is a vital infrastructure enhancement effort aimed at improving traffic circulation and mobility in the area. This phase of construction focuses on ramp widening, pavement improvements, and traffic signal upgrades to facilitate better traffic flow around Avenue J and the developing Lancaster Health District.
Motorists are advised to anticipate delays and plan for alternate routes during this period. Real-time traffic updates can be found at Quick Map.
The City of Lancaster appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation as we continue this critical infrastructure improvement. These upgrades will enhance safety, reduce congestion, and support long-term economic growth in the region.

Palmdale Opens Warming Center for Weekend Temperature Drop |
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is opening its warming center at Victory Outreach, 37419 25th St. East, due to extreme weekend temperatures. The center will be open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. from Friday, Feb. 7 through Sunday, Feb. 9. Transportation to Victory Outreach is available by calling 661/733-3823.
Overnight temperatures in the High Desert can drop significantly during the winter months, even as daytime temperatures remain warm and pleasant. Extremely cold air combined with brisk winds can result in dangerously cold wind chill conditions. People exposed to the harsh cold are susceptible to hypothermia, which occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.

Congressman Whitesides’ January Update |
As I wrap up my first month as your Congressman, I’m going to share some of the work that my team and I have gotten started in January. We’ve hit the ground running – introducing bills to address the wildfire crisis, advocating for aid for those who have been affected, joining multiple committees and caucuses, and staffing up our D.C. and L.A. County offices.
However, before I talk about all of that, I want to acknowledge the fear and panic caused by this week’s announcement that the federal government may pause critical grants that so many organizations and individuals rely on. In the days since the Office of Management and Budget memo was released, I spoke with firefighters, veterans, affordable housing nonprofits, educators, health care providers, and individuals across our district who need federal grants to continue to do their important work.
While a judge blocked the order from taking effect immediately, and the White House rescinded the memo as of Wednesday, we do not yet know what the impact will be. I am in close contact with local, state, and federal officials and will do everything I can to fight this. If you believe you may be affected by a potential grant freeze, you can fill out this survey to share your story.
