Announcements February 2025
The City of Palmdale Receives $2 Million Award for Parks and Open Spaces |
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is excited to announce that the Parks and Recreation department has received $2 million from the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District through the Measure A Parkland Acquisition Grant Program. This competitive program funds property acquisition for projects centered around parks, trails and green spaces in high-need communities throughout Los Angeles County.
Palmdale received the highest grant amount, alongside Baldwin Park, City of LA (Sylmar) and the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation (Walnut Park). The Measure A grants, totaling $17 million, are the largest parkland expansion effort in the district’s 31-year history. It will deliver 623 acres of new parkland in Los Angeles County created by 13 projects across each supervisorial district.
“Receiving this funding is a significant step toward improving our community’s access to open space,” said Mayor Richard J. Loa. “Our City takes great pride in its beautiful landscape and we are focused on preserving it for our residents to enjoy.”
Palmdale plans to expand its equestrian amenities at Tejon Park and acquiring property is the first step toward that goal. The purchase process is projected to be complete by September, making way for the next phase of development.

Palmdale Stands Strong on Crime: City Seizes Misused Handicap Placards |
PALMDALE, CA — In a targeted enforcement effort, the City of Palmdale’s Public Safety department, in conjunction with Palmdale Sheriff’s Station, recently confiscated approximately 157 handicap placards from motorists who were found to have misused the placards illegally and were in violation of the California Vehicle Code. These apprehensions are the most recent developments in Palmdale's “tough on crime” stance.
“Our commitment to combating crime remains steadfast,” said Mayor Richard J. Loa. “It is especially important that individuals who require a handicap placard can trust their City to uphold its pledge, ensuring that only those who are truly eligible receive this essential benefit.”
Most of the violations involved motorists illegally using a handicap placard not registered to them. The registered owner of a handicap placard must be present when displaying the placard in a marked handicap space. In California, using someone else’s handicap placard is illegal and comes with a hefty fine of approximately $522.00.

Congressman Whitesides' Weekly Update: Feb. 21, 2025 |
I spent the week back home in California, meeting with members of the community and activists from across the state to discuss key issues affecting our district. As I prepare to head to Washington on Monday, I will take what I’ve learned from our conversations to fight for our community’s best interests in Congress.
Many of you have contacted my office concerned about the recent string of aviation accidents. There have been 5 major plane crashes this year which combined have claimed over 85 lives. Now is not the time to be making cuts to essential agencies, like the FAA, that keep us safe. I believe the current Administration, including the Secretary of Transportation, should focus more on rapidly investigating these accidents, understanding if there are any common themes or causes, and putting into place corrective measures to keep the public safe.
HOSTING MY FIRST TOWN HALL
Yesterday, I held my first virtual town hall to discuss the recent federal actions taken by the new Administration. I spoke with experts from the House Budget Committee and local leaders in education, health care, and veterans services to answer your questions and examine the direct impact these actions could have on our district.
Everyone can agree we want our government to run more efficiently, but recent decisions to cut staff and gut federal agencies will put vulnerable populations – such as our children, seniors and veterans – at risk.
If you missed the town hall, I will be holding more in the future. If you have more questions or want to connect with my office, please reach out to me at whitesides.house.gov/contact.
