PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is making cooling centers available to help keep residents cool during an anticipated heat wave. During the heat wave, Palmdale City Library, located at 700 E. City of Palmdale Distributes Free Refurbished Laptops to Families in Need |
Palmdale, CA — The City of Palmdale reaffirmed its commitment to expanding digital access and equity by distributing free refurbished laptops to eligible SAVES clients during a special event held at SAVES on Thursday, August 15, 2025.
In partnership with Homeboy Electronics Recycling, which provided the laptops, and with support from consultant Nutter, the event also featured a Digital Resource Fair where local organizations shared information on affordable internet programs, digital literacy resources, and IT support services.
This initiative builds on the City’s ongoing work to bridge the digital divide and follows the SAVES Back-to-School Event held on June 27, 2025. Families who attended that earlier event and were preselected were invited back to receive one refurbished laptop per household, with a total of 145 laptops distributed.
“Access to technology is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity for education, employment, and everyday life,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “By providing laptops and connecting families with affordable internet and tech support, we’re helping Palmdale residents thrive in a digital world.”

Your thoughts on the new redistricting scheme |
Today, Governor Newsom announced his plan to subvert the will of the voters by redrawing California’s congressional district lines behind closed doors, and the Senate Elections Committee announced that they will be holding a hearing on the proposal next Tuesday.
The voters overwhelmingly passed the bi-partisan Citizens Redistricting Commission to increase fairness and transparency in the line-drawing process, but Governor Newsom is throwing that out the window to draw politically influenced lines behind closed doors.
Before this comes up for a vote in the Senate, I want to hear your thoughts. Please take a minute to complete this quick survey to let me know what think about allowing politicians to re-draw congressional district lines.

Palmdale Seeks Artists for Two Roundabout Sculptures |
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is inviting artists to apply for a public art initiative to create two new sculptures that will transform the newly constructed roundabouts on 10th Street East. The selected pieces should be meaningful and culturally resonant, reflecting the unique identity and diversity of the Antelope Valley.
The roundabouts, which improve safety compared to the prior traditional intersections, serve as highly visible medians for public art. Both sculptures will be created by the same artist, providing a fantastic opportunity for a unified, visual presence.
“These public art installations represent an exciting opportunity to celebrate our City’s character while enhancing the heart of our community,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “These sculptures will pay tribute to our amazing landscapes and create a lasting cultural landmark that residents can take pride in.”

New Mural Highlighting California’s Butterflies And Our Local Community Is Completed In Mariposa Park |
Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH) is pleased to announce the completion of a new mural in Lancaster's Mariposa Park, furthering the City and MOAH’s mission to bring accessible, world-class art into public spaces. Continuing the City of Lancaster’s commitment to arts and culture, Lancaster Lepidopterans is the latest mural by artist Youri Cansel, a.k.a. Mantra—and his first in California. The vibrant work adorns the walls of Mariposa Park’s community building, depicting the beauty of California's regional butterflies and showing how their biodiversity reflects the City’s own cultural diversity.
Cansell notes that, “The composition finds its balance by placing these species within their natural habitats, alongside a variety of continental floral specimens such as the Pterourus rutulus (Western Tiger Swallowtail), which can be found all along the Pacific Coast of North America, portrayed here in both its male and female forms, each exhibiting distinct colors. The Strymon melinus (Gray Hairstreak), with its gray and bright orange patterns, is one of the most widely distributed butterflies on the continent, ranging from British Columbia to Colombia and Venezuela, including South and Baja California. Its presence in the mural celebrates the diversity of both native and migrant communities. This notion of migration is further echoed by the presence of the iconic Danaus plexippus (Monarch), renowned for its long journey from Canada and the United States to Mexico.”
