Palmdale Seeks Artists for Two Roundabout Sculptures |
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is inviting artists to apply for a public art initiative to create two new sculptures that will transform the newly constructed roundabouts on 10th Street East. The selected pieces should be meaningful and culturally resonant, reflecting the unique identity and diversity of the Antelope Valley.
The roundabouts, which improve safety compared to the prior traditional intersections, serve as highly visible medians for public art. Both sculptures will be created by the same artist, providing a fantastic opportunity for a unified, visual presence.
“These public art installations represent an exciting opportunity to celebrate our City’s character while enhancing the heart of our community,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “These sculptures will pay tribute to our amazing landscapes and create a lasting cultural landmark that residents can take pride in.”

The selected artist must reside in California and be at least 18 years old. The all-inclusive budget for the two sculptures is $110,000 and covers the artist’s fee, fabrication, welding, engineering, transportation, installation and all associated expenses. Additionally, the artist will receive a $450 stipend to submit a color sketch or digital image of their proposed pieces.
Community surveys show strong support from residents for playful works that reflect Palmdale’s City Center and pay tribute to nearby Courson Park, its oldest and most historic park. Residents expressed a desire for art that celebrates local landscapes, such as the desert, Joshua trees, yucca trees, poppies and Palmdale Lake. The artwork must be original and suitable for all ages.
The selection panel will evaluate submissions based on artistic quality, professional experience, ability to work as a team member and how well their proposed pieces further the goal of the Public Art Program.
The application will be open starting on Aug. 20. Artists have until Sept. 22 to apply. To read the full selection criteria and to apply, visit www.CityofPalmdaleCA.gov/PublicArt.
