Palmdale Opens Cooling Centers to Offer Relief from Extreme Heat
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale is making cooling centers available to help keep residents cool during an anticipated heat wave. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning, which poses a high risk for heat illness. Temperatures are expected to be near or exceed 100 degrees from Wednesday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 23.

During the heat wave, Palmdale City Library, located at 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., will open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Hours may be extended based on updated weather conditions. Legacy Commons for Active Seniors, located at 930 E. Ave Q-9, will open for those aged 55+ from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Our cooling centers reflect our shared commitment to look out for one another,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “Whether you’re a senior, a family with young children or anyone needing relief, these cooling centers are here to offer you more than just air conditioning, they’re here to offer peace of mind.”
Extreme heat can pose significant health risks, especially to people who work outdoors or those without air conditioning. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure and check on senior neighbors or family members.

As a reminder, never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles because interior temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes.

For more information about extreme heat safety and cooling center locations, residents can visit www.CityOfPalmdaleCA.gov/ExtremeHeat or Ready.LACounty.gov/Heat. They can also call 2-1-1 for emergency preparedness information and other referral services. This toll-free number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents with disabilities or access and functional needs can also access 211 LA County services by visiting www.211la.org.
