| Public Art Installation: Sculptures By Anthony James Now On View At City Hall |
Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster Museum of Art & History (MOAH) is pleased to announce the installation of seven new artworks located at Lancaster's City Hall by artist Anthony James as part of the City of Lancaster Public Art Master Plan, furthering the City and MOAH’s mission to bring accessible, world-class art into public spaces. These sculptures are installed in City Hall’s first-floor lobby, second-floor lobby, and courtyard and can be viewed Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The newly installed sculptures represent a convergence of scientific inquiry and artistic expression, functioning as compelling visual metaphors for infinite potential and reflecting the City's own commitment to innovation and community advancement. A part of his Portals series, 24” Cube (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), 24” Dodecahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), 24” Icosahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), 60” Icosahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), 24" Octahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), 24" Tetrahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022), and 60” Triacontahedron (Brushed Stainless Steel) (2022) are geometric sculptures that use stainless steel, glass, and LED lights to create the illusion of infinite space. Referencing Minimalism, Formalism, and the Light and Space movement, James employs Platonic and Archimedean solids to explore the philosophical and scientific significance of form and perception. These artworks have been generously donated by the artist and are a part of the City of Lancaster’s permanent collection.
Anthony James is a British American artist based in Los Angeles. He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 1998, where he studied painting. James’ work has been exhibited at galleries and art fairs across the globe, including Saatchi Gallery, Opera Gallery, HOFA Gallery (House of Fine Art), and Art Basel. In 2023, James became the first visual artist to exhibit on all seven continents, after installing a Portals sculpture at White Desert in Antarctica.
