Announcements October 2024

Lancaster Museum of Art and History Serves as Community Hub for Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collab
Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) has joined the Getty as one of three community hub partners. The hubs are tasked with bringing a wide variety of engaging programming to various neighborhoods through the activation of the community in the Antelope Valley. There will be an opportunity to create your own Mojave Desert trading cards, walk-and-talks at the Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area, art workshops on regional flora and fauna, climate future readings, a mock online dating site to meet your local Joshua trees, and many more. The events are free and open to all ages. For more information on the engagement events that will be occurring during the Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees exhibition cycle, visit: Desert Forest Community Hub.

The Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees exhibition, presented at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History as part of the Getty PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative, sheds light on the endangered Joshua tree and the fragile Mojave Desert ecosystem that sustains it. The project integrates natural history, indigenous knowledge, public policy, scientific research, and artistic expressions to emphasize the challenges facing the Joshua tree and conservation efforts. With a focus on climate change, development, wildfires, and other threats, the exhibition explores the symbiotic relationships between Joshua trees, soil fungi, and moth pollinators, engaging a diverse audience interested in arts and environmental issues.

To create opportunities for community-based organizations to get involved in PST ART, Getty has invited three organizations—La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, LA Commons, and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History—to become Community Hubs. Each organization will use its time-tested strategies to encourage and coordinate activities by grass-roots organizations and young creatives in its area, including local environmental action groups, community science organizations, STEAM educators, artist collectives, and public agencies, bringing the themes of Art & Science Collide to populations across Los Angeles County from Antelope Valley and the Mojave Desert to East and South LA, as well as the neighborhoods across the city.

Public Health Announces New Permitting Program for At-Home Food Businesses
Permitting for Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) Program Will Begin November 1

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced today that starting October 7th, applications will be available for those who want to start their own Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) with permitting to begin November 1st. Applications will be available on the program’s website.

Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations are food facilities that are operated by a resident from their private kitchen. Once permitted, a resident can store, handle, prepare, and serve food to the public, as allowed by State law, similar to a mini restaurant.

“MEHKOs represent an important economic vehicle for entrepreneurial County residents – especially women, immigrants, and communities of color – to create new opportunities in the formal economy,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. “The MEHKO program is a groundbreaking step towards allowing home-based kitchens to operate legally and safely, enabling countless individuals to turn their culinary passions into thriving businesses. By providing a pathway for microenterprise home kitchens to comply with health and safety regulations, we are not only nurturing local entrepreneurship but also enhancing the diversity and accessibility of food options available to our residents.”

PALMDALE, CA – The City of Palmdale Fight Fentanyl Antelope Valley committee encourages youth in the community to adopt a drug-free lifestyle by participating in Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide movement focused on drug awareness. Taking place from Oct. 23 to Oct. 31, it is the largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

Red Ribbon Week is a great chance for parents, teachers and community organizations to raise awareness about substance abuse. Palmdale encourages local organizations, schools, and residents to participate in its contest to beautify their homes, classrooms and businesses in celebration of Red Ribbon Week. This is a fun way to spread awareness throughout the Antelope Valley while competing for prizes!

“We are committed to keeping our youth safe from harmful substances,” said Palmdale Mayor Austin Bishop. “This contest is a fun and engaging way to educate young people about an important issue and empower them to make healthy choices.”

As part of the awareness efforts, Palmdale residents are invited to participate in the citywide Red Ribbon Week Photo/Decorating Contest from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1. To enter, decorate your front door, mailbox or fence with a double-looped red ribbon and incorporate this year’s theme, "Life Is A Movie, Film Drug Free.™" Once your decoration is ready, snap a photo and submit your entry to https://www.cityofpalmdaleca.gov/RedRibbon.
