Palmdale Mobilizes Emergency Food Distribution as CalFresh Benefits Are Suspended
The City of Palmdale is rising to meet a potentially unprecedented need for food following the anticipated suspension of CalFresh Program benefits, affecting 1.5 million people across Los Angeles County. Beginning Monday, Nov. 3, South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES) will mobilize by switching to an emergency services mode.

SAVES will offer drive-thru services only to maximize efficiency and help reach as many families as possible during this critical time. Food will be provided Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., until further notice at the SAVES office, 1002 E. Ave. Q-12. The distribution line will start at 11th Street East and East Avenue Q-12. Service hours and days are subject to change based on community need.

No appointments are necessary, and previously scheduled appointments will not be honored. Residents may begin lining up at 9 a.m. and must be in line by 3 p.m. to receive food. Those arriving later will need to return on the following service day. Residents without vehicles may walk to the front entrance for assistance.

“Our community is facing an unprecedented challenge, and SAVES is responding by streamlining our operations to serve as many families as possible,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “We’re committed to stepping in to ensure no one in Palmdale goes hungry while CalFresh benefits are suspended.”

October Message from Assemblymember Carrillo

With the 2025 legislative session complete, I'm proud to share that several of our bills were signed into law and key budget priorities secured to strengthen local infrastructure, public safety, and youth programs across the Antelope Valley and Victor Valley.

This fall, I've enjoyed connecting with many of you at community events and celebrations. As we head into the holidays, my team is preparing new initiatives and scheduling meetings across the district. Read my October Newsletter for detailed updates on our Capitol work, new legislation, and district highlights.

Palmdale Launches Artist Mentorship to Create Signature Pelona Vista Park Mural
The City of Palmdale is accepting applications for an innovative mentorship program that will transform Pelona Vista Park. The initiative will pair a mentoring artist with four emerging local, adult artists to create a stunning, collective public mural.

The mentor will host six workshops beginning in March 2026 to provide hands-on training for their mentees. Together, the five artists will develop a concept mural design inspired by desert landscapes that reflects on Palmdale’s magnificent views. The final piece should highlight themes of athleticism, sports and soccer and convey messages of hope and peace. Their work, which will be displayed alongside the park’s ten lighted soccer fields, fitness court and mile-long walking path, will be approved by the Public Art Commission, and then the group will collaboratively install their work in June 2026.

“This program empowers our artistic community while creating a lasting tribute to Palmdale’s commitment to wellness and outdoor recreation,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “We’re fostering creative partnerships that will inspire residents and future artists for generations.”

The mentoring artist will receive $3,000, and the artists being mentored will receive $2,500. The City will prepare the installation space through pressure washing, priming and painting, and will install an anti-graffiti coating to preserve the artwork once installed. The mural should feature themes of health, wellness, sportsmanship and community pride.

Lancaster’s Beloved Beer Festival Returns with a New Name and a Fresh Pour of Fun
Day of the Drafts Beer & Wine Festival Set for November 1 at AV Fair & Event Center

The City of Lancaster is proud to announce the return of one of its most anticipated community traditions — now with a refreshing new twist. Formerly known as Field of Drafts, the Day of the Drafts Beer & Wine Festival is set for Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the AV Fair & Event Center.

Grow Green This Winter: Free Compost at Palmdale Landfill
PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale invites residents to take home free, nutrient-rich compost to prepare their gardens for winter planting or set the stage for a thriving spring bloom. This free community resource is available while supplies last on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Palmdale Landfill, located at 1200 City Ranch Road.

This high-quality compost was produced using yard waste and food scraps collected from Palmdale residents through the City’s recycling program. By transforming what was once destined for the landfill into valuable soil, the City, in partnership with WM, is helping residents to grow healthier gardens while supporting sustainability.

“This is a perfect example of how we’re closing the loop on waste and turning it into something beneficial for our City,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Bettencourt. “Our residents contribute their organic waste throughout the year, and now they can take home the finished product to enrich their own gardens. Whether you have a green thumb or are just getting started, quality compost makes all the difference in creating a healthy, productive garden.”

This event is open exclusively to Palmdale residents who live within the City limits. Participants must bring their own shovels, containers or bags to transport the compost home.

The City continues to urge all residents to do their part to support the compost program by placing their organic waste into their green bins. Diverting this material from the landfill helps reduce methane emissions and creates a sustainable resource for the community. Once collected, the composting process takes several months and produces a dark, crumbly soil rich in nutrients that helps plants thrive and improves soil health.
