Nominations Open for the Tom Hilzendeger 2025 Veteran of the Year Award
Honor a Local Hero in the Antelope Valley

PALMDALE, CA — The City of Palmdale invites residents to submit nominations for the Tom Hilzendeger 2025 Veteran of the Year award starting on November 11.

This award celebrates a local veteran who exemplifies bravery, dedication and sacrifice and is committed to serving and uplifting the Antelope Valley veteran community through selfless acts. The recognition is bestowed regardless of military rank or branch of service.

“We are honored to launch the nominations for the 2025 Veteran of the Year Award in Palmdale,” said
Palmdale Mayor Austin Bishop. “This award stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of our local veterans. Their commitment to selfless service and community engagement reflects the values we hold dear in Palmdale.”

Fred Barthe’, a United States Navy and Coast Guard veteran, received the award in 2024. Tony Tortolano, a United States Marine veteran, was honored in 2023. Jack Woolbert, a United States Navy veteran, received the award in 2022. The first recipient of the award, in 2021, was Kevin Sanders, a United States Marine Corps veteran.
All nominees must be residents of the Antelope Valley and know about their nomination. They must also be active-duty personnel, reservists or retired with an honorable discharge from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard or National Guard.

“The Veteran of the Year Award is more than just recognition; it’s a celebration of the sacrifice and service of those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms,” said Mayor Pro Tem Richard J. Loa. “These individuals represent the best of our community through their constant support for one another. I encourage our residents to reflect on and participate in this meaningful recognition process by nominating a veteran who has made a difference.”

To nominate a veteran, fill out the application at www.CityOfPalmdaleCA.gov/VeteranOfTheYear by Thursday, March 31, 2025. The award recipient will be announced and recognized at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
