New Publication “Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees”, Tells the Story of the Joshua Tree and its Mojave Desert Habitat
Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) is pleased to announce Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees, a publication that compiles writings and artworks that examine humankind’s relationship with the Joshua tree. The book will be released and available for purchase on September 7, 2024, during the opening reception for the Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees exhibition.

Edited by Sant Khalsa and Juniper Harrower, Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees is a comprehensive collection of historical and personal stories and imagery that illuminates humanity’s deeply entangled relationship with the Joshua tree. Leading scientists, artists, indigenous culture bearers, historians, conservationists, policymakers, and creative writers, share their multidisciplinary research to spotlight the Joshua tree in response to the growing threat of climate change and the explosion of development across Mojave Desert lands. Following the trails of beneficial plant kinships as well as the damage done by ongoing extractions, they illuminate desert cosmologies through this unique icon—all while bringing readers closer to the being that is the Joshua tree. The book is for everyone concerned about the unfolding impacts of human actions in the natural world and how humanity can find better ways of living together through acts of care and repair.

The publication features writings by Cameron Barrows, Darin Boville, Andi Campognone, Chris Clarke, James W. Cornett, Brendan Cummings, Shana NysDambrot, Tyler Green, Juniper Harrower, Daniel Oren Hastings, Kelly Herbinson, Geary Hund, Alexandra Jonassen, Sant Khalsa, Greg Levine, Lauren Lien, Sean Milanovich, Ruth Nolan, Christopher Irwin Smith, Lynn C. Sweet, Ruth Wallen, Cane West, and Jeremy B. Yoder.

City of Lancaster Celebrates National Preparedness Month with Giveaway and Community Education Campaign
Lancaster, CA - This September, the City of Lancaster is joining the national effort to promote National Preparedness Month, raising awareness about the importance of being ready for disasters and emergencies. With the potential for earthquakes, fires, flash floods, droughts, electrical outages, high winds, and an occasional snowstorm, Lancaster faces a range of challenges. The key to staying safe is being prepared in advance and staying informed.

"National Preparedness Month serves as a positive reminder of the importance of being ready for any emergency," said Mayor R. Rex Parris. "In Lancaster, the safety and well-being of our residents is a top priority, and we continuously work to enhance our preparedness and response capabilities. By staying informed, making plans, and building community resilience, we can ensure that our City remains strong and united in the face of any challenge. Together, we can create a safer future for all. Let's take this month to educate, prepare, and protect our loved ones and our community. Stay safe, Lancaster."

To support residents in their preparedness efforts, the City of Lancaster will be running a month-long educational campaign on its social media platforms. This campaign will provide essential tips and information to help the community stay ready for emergencies. Additionally, in honor of National Preparedness Month, the City will be hosting a giveaway for two emergency kits. Residents are encouraged to follow the City's social media channels to learn how to enter the contest and get the chance to win these essential kits, designed to help families stay safe during unexpected events.

Lancaster’s emergency response program, Ready Lancaster, emphasizes three key steps: Ready. Respond. Recover. The City encourages every household to develop a family emergency plan and assemble an emergency supply kit. Simple steps, such as dividing responsibilities during an emergency, agreeing on a safe meeting location in case of separation, and having important documents readily accessible, can make all the difference when disaster strikes.

"As we recognize National Preparedness Month, it's crucial that every member of our community takes steps to protect their families and neighborhoods," said Councilmember Raj Malhi. "I encourage everyone to take advantage of our available resources and information through our Ready Lancaster emergency prepardness program to ensure we are all ready for whatever challenges may come our way."

Palmdale City Leaders Strongly Object to Release of Convicted Rapist to Nearby Community
Convict Christopher Hubbart Hearing for Placement in Pearblossom-Area Scheduled for October 1

PALMDALE, CA – The City of Palmdale has been informed that convicted serial rapist Christopher Hubbart is to be released from the Department of State Hospitals as per the order of a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will be holding a placement hearing October 1, 2024 to consider his placement at 28800 Cruthers Creek Road, Pearlblossom, CA 93553.

City leaders have responded with anger and frustration at this news, and while the placement address is outside the city limits of Palmdale, it is recognized that his presence will create fear for many women in the area.

"Our greater Antelope Valley community has been through this before with rapist Hubbart. The only place this dangerous criminal belongs is in confinement. Both the City and myself personally will be submitting comments objecting to his release and his placement in Pearlblossom," stated Mayor Austin Bishop. "We need to protect our community. Hubbart’s mere presence will haunt and strike fear in many women."
